Automated Process Control System for CCM No.2.

The specialists of our enterprise, together with the specialists of the Federal State Unitary Enterprise «I.P.Bardin Central Research Iron and Steel Institute», have completed works on development of basic and detailed engineering as part of the project for modernization of 4-strand bloom caster No.2, operated in arc-furnace melting shop at «Volzhsky Pipe Plant» (the project named «Nonrust stream»).  

In the course of two-stage engineering the JSC «ASC» has developed documentation for electrical equipment and APCS of continuous-casting machine, including application software for process controllers, visualization system and Level 2 system.  

The automated process control system is a two-level one. The first level is the level of PLC and visualization system, for control of machines via the operator workstation and output of required diagnostic data to the workstation. The second level is the level of billet tracking, report generation and exchange with the factory manufacturing execution system.

The control system of CCM and auxiliary machines is built on basis of six programmable controllers:

  • — common PLC – implements the functions of control of the casting platform’s machines and basic data exchange with the third-party packaged systems;
  • — strand PLC – control of cooling and transfer of a continuous cast billet (4 pcs.);
  • — exit side PLC – control of weighing and transfer of billets to the stockyard. 

The CCM’s machines are driven using more than 100 frequency converters and soft starters. 

The visualization system of both the first and the second level employs a virtualization technology. To improve reliability the redundant virtualization servers are used.
